The band chose its name as a parody of a famous Los Angeles glam band during the late 1980s, Pretty Boy Floyd. The group was supposed to open for the band at a show in Santa Barbara, so they decided to call themselves Ugly Kid Joe as a contrast to Pretty Boy Floyd. The night of the show, Pretty Boy Floyd canceled their appearance, but the name Ugly Kid Joe picked for themselves stuck.

Band

Ugly Kid Joe is a band that has gone through several incarnations. Today, the group has five members: Whitfield Crane, Klaus Eichstadt, Cordell Crockett, Dave Fortman, and Shannon Larkin. The group released their first EP, As Ugly as They Wanna Be, in 1991, and that EP ended up being the first EP to go platinum and the highest-selling debut EP of all time. After playing together for six years and recording several more albums, the band ended up breaking up, only to reunite in 2010 to continue making music. Recently, Ugly Kid Joe ran a successful crowdfunding campaign to finance the recording and releasing of a brand new record -- the first they will have put out in over a decade.

Breakthrough

Ugly Kid Joe saw a huge amount of success with their first EP release, As Ugly as They Wanna Be, recorded in 1991. That EP launched them to superstardom after going platinum and selling more than one million copies. The record featured the single "Everything About You," which reached the No. 3 spot on the UK top singles chart.

Hit Albums

After the huge success of their first creation, Ugly Kid Joe went on to release another hit record in 1992, America's Least Wanted. The album reached the No. 11 spot on the UK albums chart, as well as the No. 27 spot on the U.S. top albums chart and the No. 7 spot on the Australian chart. It also went double platinum. The band also had another successful record, "Menace to Sobriety," released in 1995. That album charted in the UK, US, Australia, Austria, and Switzerland.
