Going into the Dec. 4 game against the South Florida Bulls, UConn was tied with Pittsburgh and West Virginia for the Big East title. Having beaten both teams, a win against South Florida would send the Huskies to a bowl game. UConn’s 19–16 victory was due primarily to the four successful field goals by Dave Teggart. Teggart was named Big East Player Special Team Member of the Week, and the Huskies were invited to the Fiesta Bowl.
