An overview of the Haymarket Theatre
The original playhouse opened back in 1720 in the Highmarket section of London's City of Westminster, when a royal patent was obtained to host drama and the life of a West End institution was born. This venerable site has witnessed stage plays by celebrated British playwrights such as Samuel Johnson and John Gay among others and earned its place in folklore when it hosted the very first matinee ever held. Resting in its present location since 1821, Haymarket Theatre spent the next two hundred years offering a variety of plays, operas and other artistic productions like The Libertine, Barking in Essex and the Royal Shakespeare Company London and its repertoire. Such a distinguished career is sure to experience structural improvements over the years. The auditorium itself was redesigned in 1904 and ninety years later underwent an extensive GBP1.3 million renovation that saw its seating capacity extended. Now more than 880 spectators can sample this charming venue for themselves. Theatre Royal Haymarket tickets are ready now to buy or sell via StubHub.
