Open Championship 2019: 148th tournament to be held in Northern Ireland

First held in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland, The Open Championship is the oldest and one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf. Along with the Masters, the US Open and the PGA Championship, The Open is one of the sport's major championship events and, with top ranking points and prize money (as well as a place in history) at stake, is one of the most coveted trophies in golf.

The reigning champion of the competition is automatically invited to play in the other three majors for the next five years. The prize of the tournament is the Golf Champion Trophy, commonly known as the Claret Jug, and the champion personally keeps the trophy until the next competition the following year. The champion also receives a gold medal, which they are allowed to keep permanently.

Open Championship: can Rory McIlroy shine on home soil?

Harry Vardon holds the record for the most Open Championship victories - winning the tournament six times - while other multiple winners include James Braid, Peter Thomson and Tom Watson (all five titles); Walter Hagen and Bobby Locke (four); and Tiger Woods (three). The oldest winner is Tom Morris Senior, who was 46 when he won the title in 1867. Conversely, his son, Tom Morris Junior, became the youngest winner of the championship when he won the tournament aged 17 in 1868. He also won the most consecutive times with four victories (1868–72). 

The current champion is Francesco Molinari, who posted a bogey-free final round of 69 to win his first major championship. In finishing two shots ahead of rivals Kevin Kisner, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele, Molinari also became the first Italian player to win a major.

2019's event will be held at Northern Ireland's Royal Portrush Golf Club with home favourite Rory McIlroy hoping to add to his maiden title in 2014.
