The Magic Numbers: melodic indie smiles

Formed by two sets of siblings (singer Romeo Stodart, bassist Michele Stodart, multi-instrumentalist Angela Gannon and drummer Sean Gannon) in Ealing in 2002, the band spent their formative years touring London's indie circuit; quickly amassing a cult following in the capital (including famous fans such as the Chemical Brothers and Travis). Endorsements from the likes of NME further aided their rise, with the group signing to Heavenly Records in 2004. In the summer of the same year, The Magic Numbers began supporting well-known artists such as Ed Harcourt and Snow Patrol and appeared on the bill of some smaller UK festivals, before releasing the single "Hymn for Her" in November 2004. 

A mixture of the hype surrounding their live performances and a huge cult following in London (despite only having released one single, the band played a sold-out show to a crowd of over 2,000 at The Forum in Kentish Town) meant The Magic Numbers' debut album was much-anticipated. Released in June 2005, the record was both a commercial and critical success; spawning the singles "Love Me Like You", "Love's a Game" and "I See You, You See Me" and leading into a showstopping performance at Glastonbury in the same month. The album was shortlisted for the 2005 Mercury Music Prize, although the award later went to Antony and the Johnsons for their record I Am A Bird Now.

The band did another extensive run of shows to promote and tour second album Those the Brokes (2007), including supporting The Who in Southampton and making another appearance at Glastonbury. After taking some time off in 2008, the band released third album The Runaway in 2010, and again played Glastonbury Festival. Michele Stodart released her solo country album Wide-Eyed Crossing in 2012, before the band released fourth album Alias in 2014.
