A humble flax mill turned music hub: The Cluny
The Cluny is a live music and entertainment venue inside a former flax-spinning mill, located on Lime Street in Newcastle, England. Also a pub and cafe, the venue is regularly voted as one of the best bars in the world, serving up an extensive selection of ales. The building first opened in 1848 as a flax mill, which lasted for 12 years before becoming a bottling plant for Scotch whisky. The bottling plant was named The Cluny, which has stuck as the venue's name today. The Cluny has operated as a bar and live music venue with food service since 2002, and you can buy or sell The Cluny tickets on StubHub now.
Discover Newcastle’s best live music venue
The Cluny has time and again been recognised as one of the most iconic venues in Newcastle, if not the UK. Many high-profile acts have performed live at the venue, including The Vaccines, Mumford and Sons, Arctic Monkeys, Dannii Minogue, The Wombats, Duffy, Solange Knowles and many more. It was also one of the venues that was used for the filming of "The JD Set", a programme broadcast on Channel 4, and was one of the key locations for the indoor programme of the Evolution Festival UK. In 2009 it was named "Best Live Music Venue" by Generator North East, a music development agency. Its great success has led to the opening of The Cluny 2, which settled into the former Round Theatre next door. The Cluny 2 is a theatre-style venue with an intimate 180-person capacity, and has seen performances by Elliott Brood, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and The Duke and The King, amongst others. The bar, the food and the transport links
The venue's kitchen is almost as famous as the music menu, serving great food from midday until around 9pm. There are plenty of vegetarian-friendly options and the food is mostly homemade. If you’re heading out for a drink, there is a small bar inside The Cluny 1 and a much larger bar in The Cluny 2. Getting there is made easy with several public transport links available: many bus services stop off at New Bridge Street near the top of Stepney Bank, and Byker and Manor metro stations are also both within walking distance of the venue.
