Steve Vai Biography - Learning From the Best
Picking up an axe for the first time as he entered his teens, this New York native learned his trade from a famous teacher, none other than Joe Satriani. By the age of 20, he was working with Frank Zappa, transcribing the seminal experimental artist's solos into sheet music, and later joining the madcap musician's backing band. Soon, SV would gain a reputation as an expert gun for hire, appearing on albums by the likes of John Lydon's Public Image Ltd and David Lee Roth. In 1989, his career hit a notable peak when he joined hard rock heroes Whitesnake, while his collaborative talents were later utilised on Alice Cooper's 1991 album Hey Stoopid.
Recording his solo LPs in-between his stints with other groups, starting with 1984's Flex-Able, this gifted performer can more than cut it on his own steam. The recipient of more than 40 awards - including three Grammys - he's recognised as one his instrument's finest living practitioners. As the release of his 2012 effort The Story of Light proves, he's showing no signs of slowing down just yet, either.
