Stereo MCs are a British rap group that formed in London, England in 1985. They are possibly the biggest selling hip hop group that ever hailed from the UK and there is a reason why; they have a tight sound that spans genres of rap, hip hop and alt rock and appeals to a wide range of fans.

This is a band that loves a good live show and they never disappoint their fans when they hit the stage. Trivia

The Stereo MCs loved playing with the Happy Mondays. The lead singer said that while most main acts on tour limit your use of the PA, don't provide a toilet in the dressing room or food to eat for the opening bands, The Mondays were super sweet and gave them everything they asked for. Birch is now a father and his kids dig his music - he says they'll hear it on the radio and start dancing.

Band

Stereo MCs is made up of Rob Birch on vocals, Nick "The Head" Hallam on turntables and production, Cath Coffey on backing vocals and Ian "Owen If" Rossiter on drums. They met in London during the 80s and came up with a vision of creating a fresh new sound of British rap that hadn't really been done before. They set to work hand-making drum loops for their first album and cemented the bond that would keep them together for decades to come.

The band hinged their success on creating a uniquely British version of what was formerly an American style of music. They took cues from Public Enemy and various acid house bands and blended it together in their own eccentric style. In fact, part of what their albums have addressed is their reluctance to be pigeonholed into a particular genre. They like blurring the lines and being known for coming up with something previously unexplored and undefined.

Breakthrough

Their first album, 33 45 78, was released in the late 80s and had a super raw sound that attracted popular bands and producers in London. But their big break didn't come until 1992 when their single 'Connected' was released. The song became a huge hit in both the United Kingdom and the United States. It was popular with a hip hop crowd and also on American alt rock radio.

Hit Albums

The band's most successful album was the chart-topper Connected, which landed them tours with bands like Happy Mondays and U2. The album featured the well-known single of the same name. Their follow up didn't come out for almost a decade but that one, Deep Down & Dirty was a success as well. They are also well-known for producing many great songs, such as Madonna's 'Frozen' and the Jungle Brother's self-titled album.

Show Experience

Stereo MCs are known for their superb live shows, which feature spectacular antics. You can expect lively light shows with a full stage and tons of dance beats. Lead singer Rob B. loves to strut around onstage with his mic, waving his arms in the air and working up a sweat belting out the lyrics and encouraging the audience to sing along. They usually have a crowd of dancers onstage to keep the crowd pumped up and their audiences tend to be the dancing sort so come expecting to work up a sweat.
