Spice Girls reunion: global pop phenomenon back together for 2019 tour
With over 100 music awards; albums sales of 85 million; and 10 global number one singles – including some of the catchiest, most memorable pop songs ever produced (think "Stop", "Spice Up Your Life" and "Who Do You Think You Are") – few artists in the history of music can claim to have conquered the world quite like the Spice Girls. Manufactured in 1994 to compete with popular boy bands such as Take That and East 17, Victoria Adams, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton beat off competition from hundreds of others to form what would go on to become the great pop phenomenon of the late 90s.
Calling themselves the Spice Girls, the group released their debut single "Wannabe" in July 1996; topping the charts in 37 countries and establishing themselves as an almost-instant worldwide success. Follow-up single "Say You'll Be There" (another UK number one) was released three months later, as the anticipation surrounding the band's forthcoming debut album reached almost fever pitch. Released in November 1996, Spice was an unprecedented success; spending 15 weeks at UK number one and going on to become the biggest-selling album of all time in the UK by a female group.
A captivated British press soon gave each Spice Girl their own nickname and, barely six months since their debut hit, the aliases "Scary", "Sporty", "Baby", "Ginger" and "Posh" became as widely recognisable as John, Paul, George and Ringo had been in the 1960s. Dubbed the "Fab Five", the Spice Girls were greeted by a crowd of 500,000 when they switched on the 1996 Christmas lights in London's Oxford Street, before scoring the first of three consecutive Xmas number ones with third single "2 Become 1".
After memorable performances at the Brit Awards (where Halliwell first wore her now world-famous Union Jack mini-dress) and a best-selling book/manifesto titled Girl Power!, the Spice Girls released their much-anticipated second album, Spiceworld in November 1997. Another global best seller, the album went on to sell over 20 million copies worldwide, spawned another three UK number ones ("Spice Up Your Life", "Too Much" and "Viva Forever") and was followed by another sell-out world tour.
After the departure of Halliwell in 1998, the group released third and final album Forever before reuniting in late-2007 for a three-month world tour titled The Return of the Spice Girls. Among the tour highlights was a 17-night sell-out of London's The O2 Arena which drew 256,647 fans and sold out in 38 seconds.
Since then, they've performed together once (at the London Olympics closing ceremony in 2012), but the girls have announced that they're returning - minus Victoria Beckham - for a 2019 reunion tour at venues in Manchester, London, Coventry, Sunderland, Bristol and Edinburgh.
