Fabulous modern facilities
A historic ground for cricket in Wales, Sophia Gardens Cardiff hosted its inaugural first-class match in 1967. Backing on to the River Taff, the stadium is stunningly set in Sophia Gardens with Bute Park and Cardiff Castle on the horizon. Home to the Glamorgan County Cricket Club, the venue has undergone a host of redevelopments to turn it into a world-class facility. In 2008, renovations led to the capacity increasing to 16,000 and a state of the art pavilion being erected. An innovative drainage system was also installed, mitigating the risk of matches being abandoned due to rain. Five gigantic floodlights allow the stadium to host night time matches, providing clear visibility from all areas of the stands. Sophia Gardens Cardiff is located approximately 1 mile from Cardiff Central train station, from which you can enjoy a beautiful walk along the River Taff that will only take 20 minutes. A modern ground in a picturesque location, don't miss the chance to buy or sell Sophia Gardens Cardiff tickets online on StubHub.
Staging cricket's biggest series
Sophia Gardens Cardiff hosted its first international game during the 1999 Cricket World Cup when heavyweights Australia and New Zealand faced off against each other. In front of a packed out stadium, New Zealand Cricket secured a memorable victory against eventual tournament champions Australia Cricket thanks to a sensational unbeaten innings from Roger Twose. In 2009, the ground staged The Ashes for the first time, becoming the 100th venue to have hosted the historic series. It was the first international Test match held at the ground and drew tens of thousands of supporters over the five days. Despite a rampaging Australian side that belted a total of 674/6d, England Cricket were able to hold on and secure a draw. The memorable result had a huge impact on the English team and went a long way to helping them reclaim the series. In front of more than 5,000 spectators in 2010, Sophia Gardens Cardiff welcomed England and Pakistan for the first ever Twenty20 match played at the venue.
