Staging the Cricket World Cup

In the first ever One Day International held at Somerset County Cricket Club, the English were able to prevail on the back of a dominant century from David Gowers. Thousands of spectators packed in to the historical oval, with a captivated audience hanging on every ball. 16 years later, the pinnacle competition of short form cricket would return to England and once again the ground was chosen to host matches. Fans were treated to a powerful India Cricket side at Somerset County Cricket Club, easily accounting for Sri Lanka, who were bundled out of the tournament. The batting-friendly short boundaries again aided a tremendous innings, with Indian legend Surav Ganguly making 183 runs. The ground has also been the official home of the England women's cricket team, regularly staging matches since 1997. The all-conquering side have become world champions in both Twenty20 and One Day International formats since moving to the venue.
