Born in 1984 in West Bengal, this exotic soloist discovered her musical side by watching her mother's singing. By the age of four she was already learning to accompany her mother on the harmonium and soon began studying Hindustani classical music. After appearing on Indian musical gameshow Sa Re Ga Ma Pa she caught the eye of a Bollywood director, who offered her a singing role in movie hit Devdas. The songstress soon found herself winning awards for her playback role, marking the start of an acclaimed career in singing that has also resulted in a day named after her in Ohio.
