Shawn Mendes tour: Canadian superstar to visit UK in 2019

Another superstar off the Canadian production line, Shawn Mendes follows compatriots Drake and Justin Bieber into international stardom. After first finding fame as an internet star in North America, the Toronto-born star has made his name across the Atlantic with hits such as "In My Blood", "Lost In Japan", "Youth" and UK number one "Stitches".

To coincide with the release of his self titled third album (released May 2018), the singer has delighted fans by announced that he will visit the UK in April 2019. Mendes will play seven dates: starting in Glasgow on 6 April and finishing in London on 17 April, and will also visit Leeds, Manchester, Dublin and Birmingham in the spring of next year. Shawn Mendes: meteoric rise of another Canadian

Shawn Peter Raul Mendes grew up in Pickering, a suburb of Toronto, and had an interest in music from a young age. As a teenager, he posted pop cover versions on the internet, on platforms such as Twitter, YouTube and Vine; with his interpretation of the Adele song "Hometown Glory" going on to become a viral internet hit in America and helping Mendes gather millions of new followers.

It was around this time that artist manager Andrew Gertler became aware of the upcoming star, and Mendes was quickly signed to Island Records. At the age of 16, he released debut album Handwritten, whose single "Stitches" reached number one in the UK, while previously released lead single "Life of the Party" – which appeared when he was just 15 – earned Mendes the title of youngest artist ever to make it into the Top 25 single charts in America.

The success of "Stitches", in particular, ensured Shawn Mendes became known across Europe, as the song reached top tens across the continent. As a result of his enhanced standing, he opened for pop icon Taylor Swift in 2015 during the North American leg of her 1989 world tour and, in January 2016, was awarded the People's Choice Award for Favorite Breakout Artist. In September of the same year Mendes released his second album Illuminate, which reached the top three worldwide and helped him win the MTV EMA Award for Best Male Artist.
