Sepultura: boundary-pushing metal heads

With a band name that translates as 'grave' in Portuguese, it was clear from the start that now legendary Brazilian band Sepultura would be driven by anger and aggression. Taking cues from the original and best, metal-loving brothers Max and Igor Cavalera grew up listening to the likes of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, but were only inspired to start creating their own music after their father died. The brothers signed a deal with Cogumelo Records and released their debut album Morbid Visions in 1986, a melancholic metal record crafted in the memory of their father.

Their sophomore album Schizophrenia helped them make their mark on the European metal scene, and fans from across the globe began clamouring to see the unique South American act perform live. As the 1990s progressed, Sepultura were invited to many high profile music events, improving their reputation as a stellar live act by performing alongside the likes of Ozzy Osbourne at Rock in Rio.
