Discover their long history in the game
The club was first established in 1920 under the name of Athleta. In the first few years of its life, it changed its name first to Spartaan and then to v.v. Heerenveen. It wasn’t until the 1970s that it was renamed SC Heerenveen, due to a split that divided the club into an amateur and a professional side. In its early years the club was quite strong and won many local championships, even during the German occupation. From the 50s through to the 80s the club went through a rough patch, but it began to recuperate in 1990 when it became the first club from Frisia to join the top division. That success was largely attributed to the coach at the time, Foppe de Haan. Since then, SC Heerenveen has established itself as one of the top teams in the Netherlands and Europe as a whole. SC Heerenveen’s legacy
Throughout its long history, SC Heerenveen has counted a number of talented players who have become a part of the club’s legacy. One of these players – and perhaps the most renowned of them all – is Abe Lenstra, who is considered one of the best Dutch footballers of all time and played with SC Heerenveen from 1936 to 1954. In his tenure with the club he was the top scorer for almost every season, and scored over 500 goals with the team. SC Heerenveen honoured their star by naming their new football stadium after him. If you’re going to a home game at the Abe Lenstra Stadion Heerenveen – the home of SC Heerenveen – make sure to wear their colours of blue and white. However, beware that at away games they switch to their red uniform. Keep that in mind when you purchase SC Heerenveen tickets on our website!
