The Toronto, Ontario, native played for New York, Orlando, and Toronto in 194 games with 18 goals and 65 assists. Merrill had 570 penalty minutes total in his career along with 818 face-off wins. As a player, he won three NLL titles and four Mann Cup championships. He was part of Team Canada internationally, and they won the silver medal at the 2010 World Field Lacrosse Championships in Manchester, England. The next year, he won gold in Prague at the FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championships. Other members of the coaching staff include offensive coordinator Josh Sanderson and defensive coordinator Bill Greer.
