Born in 1953, Cray's first forays into music began during his teenage years when he formed high school band Steakface. He soon grew sick of simply playing covers and after seeing heroes Albert Collins and B.B. King live the young musician was inspired to form his current band. Years of local success saw the singer sign to Mercury Records in 1982 and he was soon met with widespread acclaim when four years later album Strong Persuader received a Grammy. At this point he started gaining recognition and was sought out to open for other music stars including Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan. Refusing to listen to blues "purists" who believed that the genre should not mix with soul, the artist was vindicated in 2011 after his talent and innovation saw him inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. His effortless guitar shredding and the mellow on-stage demeanour of his band make the group a must-see act for any blues fan.
