What notable players have played for the Richmond Spiders?The team has had its share of notable players come through the ranks. Bob Coolbaugh played for the Washington Redskins, scoring four career touchdowns and having 435 receiving yards. Mike Bragg was a fifth-round draft pick for the Washington Redskins. He has been listed as one of the 70 Greatest Redskins. Walker Gillette was a first-round draft pick for the San Diego Chargers. He has played for the Chargers, Cardinals, and Giants, scoring 12 receiving touchdowns. He also has been inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Barty Smith was a 1974 first-round draft pick for the Green Bay Packers. He played for them from 1974-1980, scoring 18 career touchdowns. He also was Packer Offensive Player of the Year in 1977. One notable player had a short-lived NFL career. Leland D. Melvin was an 11th-round draft pick by the Detroit Lions in 1986. Due to a hamstring injury, Melvin’s NFL career was cut short, and he ended up working for NASA as an astronaut. He flew two missions on the space shuttle Atlantis.
