The Britpop legend is famed for singing anthems such as "Bittersweet Symphony" but since their break-up in the late 1990s, he's carved out an impressive solo career; even working with notoriously selective musicians like Noel Gallagher. Richard Ashcroft: rock idol

Born in the Wigan suburb of Billinge, budding musician Richard Ashcroft soon found fellow musical compatriots at Upholland Comprehensive School, where he met future band mates Simon Jones, Simon Tong and Peter Salisbury. With the addition of guitarist Nick McCabe soon afterwards, the band was formed. Debut single "All in the Mind" received a huge amount of attention for The Verve, and they eventually reached the upper echelons of the charts with enormous singles "Bittersweet Symphony" and "The Drugs Don't Work".

When the group split amid long-running tensions, the frontman went solo. Ashcroft's first album Alone With Everybody was released shortly after the turn of the millennium and allowed him to embark on a sold-out American tour. A second, more spiritual LP followed with Human Conditions, while his long anticipated third record Keys to the World established him as an artist of distinction. He spent the following years working on side project the United Nations of Sound, but abandoned it after one eponymously titled album. It would be another six years before he announced plans for new album These People, which saw the music-maker return to top form and regain his crown as an enigmatic rock idol.
