Over the years, Providence has played a lot of incredible hockey. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the team was coached by the legendary Lou Lamoriello and routinely posted winning seasons. For much of their history, Providence was a part of the ECAC conference. The Friars moved to Hockey East for the 1984-85 season. They got off to a great start, posting a 23-17 record during their first year in the conference. The Friars have been in Hockey East ever since, playing against teams like the Boston College Eagles, UMass' Minutemen and Boston University's Terriers. Where do the Providence Friars play hockey?The Providence Friars hockey team calls Schneider Arena home. This venue first opened in 1973, and was extensively renovated in 2013. Schneider Arena is now a fully modern facility, with updated locker rooms, new coaches' office and more. The Friars have a notable .608 winning percentage at home. This venue seats just over 3,000 fans when it's configured for hockey. In addition to hosting the Friars, Schneider Arena is the home rink for women's hockey and for Providence College lacrosse. The arena is named for the late Rev. Herman D. Schneider, O.P., who founded the Friars' hockey program.
Who is the head coach for the Providence Friars?Nate Leaman is the head coach of the Providence Friars hockey team. He was named head coach of the Friars in the spring of 2011, after serving as head coach of Union College for eight years. Since coming to Providence, Leaman has helped to restore the Friars hockey team to national prominence. In his first season at the helm, the Friars made it to the Hockey East Semifinals. It was their first such appearance since 2001. Over the years, things have only improved. Leaman has posted a winning record in his first nine seasons as head coach, with a record of 190-110-43. He won the Spencer Penrose Award as D-I coach of the year in 2011. Leaman was also named Hockey East Coach of the Year for 2016.
Who are some notable Providence Friars?Providence has had a highly-regarded NCAA hockey program for decades. Over the years, several former Friars have graduated to professional leagues. These include position players Ron Wilson, Hal Gill, Fernando Pisani and goaltender Chris Terreri. The Friars continue to develop very skilled hockey players.
