Proctors Theatre History
Proctors Theatre (formerly Proctor's) has had everything from vaudeville to Britney Spears, which tells you quite a bit about why it's become nothing shy of an iconic part of the Schenectady, New York night life. This is a theater that has held all sorts of different shows and has been entertaining audiences for many different generations, as the doors first opened back in 1926 and it has evolved with the entertainment scene ever since. Proctors Theatre was in all its glory in the late-1930s as a cinema. "The Wizard of Oz" would go on to be one of the biggest hits in the theater's history and "Gone with the Wind" soon followed, helping to make Proctors the place for Hollywood's top movies of the golden age. After the decline following the invention of the television, Proctors would then go through a community restoration in which local audiences were encouraged to actually participate. In addition to many contributions from the local community, the restoration was also supported by such entertainment icons as Hal Holbrook and Tony Bennett.
