This is the world's most dynamic professional fighting event that regales sportsmanship and skill. Some of Europe's most esteemed and revered fighters take the stage for brief bouts of jiu-jitsu.
Polaris 5 background
For years, London has held the annual Polaris 5 championship. It is the only no-gi competition offering 15-minute bouts of pure, unadulterated action. This competitive exhibition brings together athletes from various forms of martial arts, fighting and boxing, all in one centre-stage bout. The event moves quickly, creating a hierarchy wherein one athlete reigns supreme and is dubbed the Polaris 5 Champion from among some of Europe's most renowned grapplers. Winners are determined by submission or a judge's decision based on grappling skill during the match, and competitors are encouraged to use as much constant action as possible during each brief bout.
Polaris 5 biggest hits
Heavy hitters are well-known on the jiu-jitsu circuit. Several of these groups include MMA fighters, Polaris veterans, national champions and European headliners. Some of the athletes featured at past Polaris 5 events include: UFC fighter and Polaris veteran Phil Harris, Jake Shields, Brad 'One Punch' Pickett, Dan 'the Raspberry Ape' Strauss, Rousimar Palhares, Dillon Danis and Garry Tonon, otherwise known as 'The Lion Killer.' Many of these already well-known Polaris competitors return to reclaim lost titles and avenge submissions during bouts that occasionally end in a draw. The Polaris 5 is unique in how it brings together different disciplines and champions, all vying for the black belt title and bragging rights.
Polaris 5 bio
Polaris 5 is in a category all its own when compared to other competitive fighting exhibitions or events. In this case, the winner is declared by tap-out, verbal submission or when the referee determines the competitor is unable to continue due to injury. There is also a 15-minute limit on bouts; these matches feature legal choke-holds and joint-locks, but they prohibit moves like eye-gouging, grabbing extremities, face-posting, body-slamming or grabbing the clothes of a competitor. Judges assess grappling skills, including the positive and negative manoeuvres, to determine a winner when no submission occurs. Fans are treated to spectacular take-downs, wily reversals and clever countering.
