Players Championship snooker: season's top 16 back in action in March 2019

First held under its current guise in Llandudno in 2017, The Players Championship is an annual snooker tournament that is contested by the most successful 16 players of the 12 months previous. Although a relatively new ranking event, the prize money on offer (£125,000 for the winner) – along with the quality of the draw – makes the Players Championship a coveted prize.

Similar in format to the Masters, the inaugural Players Championship was won by Englishman Judd Trump, who defeated Hong Kong's Marco Fu 10–8 in the final and made the tournament's high break of 136. The following year, however, Trump was knocked out by eventual winner Ronnie O'Sullivan, who beat Shaun Murphy 10-4 in the final.

Players Championship snooker: warm-up for the World Championships in April

Snooker fans will recognise the name Players Championship from the ranking event of the same name that was held at various venues in Dublin, Galway, Preston and even Bangkok from 2011-2016. During this time, matches were the best of seven throughout the tournament (including the final) with the tournament being won by the likes of Shaun Murphy, Ding Junhui (who made a maximum 147 on his way to winning the 2013 title) and Joe Perry – who claimed his first (and only) ranking title when the event was held in Thailand in 2015. 

The tournament made several changes in 2016, including extending the semi-finals to the best of 11 frames and the final to best of 19. After just one year in Bangkok, the event was moved to Manchester due to the political unrest in Thailand. Northern Ireland's Mark Allen went on to claim the title (his third ranking event triumph) as he beat Ricky Walden 10-6 in the final. 2017 saw yet more changes: the venue was changed again (this time to Llandudno), and the tournament trimmed to include only the top performing professionals from the previous 12 months. Judd Trump beat Marco Fu 10-8 in the final; taking home a total of £130,000 after collecting the £125,000 tournament winner's cheque and pocketing an extra £5,000 for the highest break. Ronnie O'Sullivan took home the title in 2018, beating Shaun Murphy 10-4 in the final.
