The Noël Coward era and venturing into musicals
The Phoenix Theatre was established in 1930 after construction led by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, an English architect primarily known for designing the iconic red London telephone box. Its exterior, a simple neoclassical style, encompasses a lavish Italianate interior designed by Russian theatrical director and designer Theodore Komisarjevsky, with red seats and carpets, golden engravings and grand art typical of Italian theatres. Magnificently decorated ceilings and carved wooden doors also add to the theatre's Italian influence as well as the unrivalled atmosphere of West End theatre. Business began with Noël Coward's comedy 'Private Lives', which starred Gertrude Lawrence and Laurence Olivier alongside Coward. The theatre developed a long-time association with Coward, who returned in 1936 with his cycle of ten one-act comedies 'Tonight at 8.30' and again in 1952 with 'Quadrille', a romantic comedy surrounding British aristocracy. On Coward's 70th birthday, the theatre's bar was named the Noël Coward bar. The charismatic playwright died a few years later and the Phoenix began hosting popular musicals, including the incredibly successful musical adaptation of The Canterbury Tales, which ran for close to two thousand shows. Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods was just one of many musicals at the Phoenix throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1991, the musical Blood Brothers began a 21-year stint, becoming the longest running production at the theatre, ending in 2012, opening the doors once again for brand-new new shows to captivate audiences from across the world.
