Of Monsters and Men: over a billion Spotify plays
Of Monsters and Men formed when lead singer Nanna Bryndis Hilmarsdottir looked to create a side project to her solo act, Songbird. After enlisting co-singer and guitarist Ragnar Thorhallsson, bassist Kristjan Pall Kristjansson and drummer Arnar Rosenkranz Hilmarsson the band was complete, and the group went on the win a battle of the bands competition in Iceland known as the Musiktilraunir festival in 2010; earning them a spot at the famous Iceland Airways Festival. Following their success, the band were quickly signed to the ingeniously named Record Records in 2011 and began to lay down material straight away. Off the back of their debut album My Head is an Animal (UK album chart number three), hit single "Little Talks" instantly received airplay and went nationwide in the USA, resulting in the group signing with Universal and earning global acclaim.
The band released sophomore album Beneath the Skin in 2015, returning with a completely different sound but still finding a spot in the UK top 10. Leaving behind the upbeat harmonies of their first album, the group's new sombre and synth infused sound marries subtle lyrics with reflective instrumental layers to create something entirely unique. With dream-like tracks such as "Crystals" and the powerful "Thousand Eyes" the group pushed musical boundaries and, in October 2017, become the first Icelandic band to hit one billion plays on Spotify.
