W.G.R. Sprague and early performances
What we now know is that the Novello Theatre was actually constructed simultaneously with the Aldwych Theatre, each lying either side of The Waldorf Hotel. Both were designed by the Australian-born theatre architect W.G.R. Sprague, whose work can be seen throughout the UK, from the Lyceum in Sheffield to the Theatre Royal in Aldershot. Most of his work, however, can be found in London. As well as the Novello, the Noel Coward Theatre and the Queen's Theatre are beautiful examples of his designs in the capital, despite the latter's front being blown off in World War II. The Novello was opened in 1905 as the Waldorf Theatre, being renamed to The Strand four years later. In 1911, it became known as the Whitney Theatre before beginning its 92-year run back as The Strand. Notable early performances include 'Arsenic and Old Lace', a black comedy by American playwright Joseph Kesselring, which ran for 1337 shows throughout the 1940s. The lyrical genius Stephen Sondheim's 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum' also ran at the Novello for almost two years. You can feel the history in the walls of this remarkable theatre, a treat for fans and newcomers to the medium alike. A line-up of magnificent shows
By 1930, the Novello was under extensive reconstruction, which was repeated at the start of the 1970s. In its 100th anniversary year, it underwent yet another refurbishment, increasing its capacity to 1,105. The theatre reopened with the Royal Shakespeare Company - London's yearly season, hosting 4-week runs of iconic Shakespeare plays such as 'The Comedy of Errors' and 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Other more recent productions at the Novello include Tennessee William's 'Cat On A Hot Tin Roof', 'Crazy For You' and the spectacular Mamma Mia.
