What is NHRA Mello Yello drag racing? The NHRA stands for National Hot Rod Association. Formed in 1951, the NHRA is the highest governing body for drag racing across the United States. The NHRA Mello Yello drag racing series is the premier professional drag racing series. The series features four pro categories — Top Fuel Eliminator, Funny Car Eliminator, Pro Stock Eliminator and Pro Stock Motorcycle Eliminator — competing in 24 National events from February through November. Each event features a 16-car shootout where cars compete in a series of four head-to-head elimination rounds until a winner is determined.
What is NHRA racing like?NHRA racing can be described in one word: intense. Each race consists of two V-8 powered machines performing a big, smoky burnout to warm the tires. Then, they begin staging at the Christmas Tree, an electronic device with rows of multicolored bulbs that signal the racers' arrival at the starting line, followed by the beginning of the race. During staging, things get tense as each driver wants to leave first. As soon as the Christmas tree flashes green, both drivers stomp on the loud pedal and fly toward the finish line.
Who are the top NHRA drivers?Across all four major NHRA classes, there are several top drivers. Currently, a few of the big names in Top Fuel are Antron Brown, Leah Pritchett and Tony Schumacher. A few of the best-known names in Funny Car are John Force, Ron Capps and Matt Hagan. The most famous names in Pro Stock are Erica Enders, Bo Butner and Greg Anderson. Some notable racers in Pro Stock motorcycle are Eddie Krawiec, Andrew Hines and Karen Stoffer.
How much are pit passes? The best part about attending an NHRA National is that admission to the pit is available at no extra cost. Unlike other motor sports, at an NHRA National, every ticket is also a pit pass. That means even if you have general admission tickets, you will have an opportunity to walk the pits, where you will have a chance to get up close to the race cars, talk with the mechanics, meet your favorite drivers. There are also plenty of opportunities to get drivers' autographs and photos throughout the day. You can get a hero card, a hat or even a diecast autographed by a driver you admire.
Who is the all-time NHRA winner? The all-time NHRA winner is Funny Car driver John Force, with 16 NHRA Mello Yello Championships. His career began in the 1970s. It was not until 1987 that he won his first NHRA National. He won his first Championship in 1990 and 10 straight titles from 1993-2002. Now over 70, he continues to compete.
