Representing Long Island

Formed in 1972, the Islanders joined the NHL alongside the now defunct Atlanta Flames as the league expanded to 16 teams. The New York Rangers had already existed for multiple decades and the NHL saw the Islanders as an opportunity to spread their market to the east of New York, specifically Long Island. The Rangers were not too pleased with the Islanders encroaching on their territory, however they were more receptive to the team once it was announced that the Islanders would play their home games at Nassau Coliseum rather than Madison Square Garden. Establishing a team dynasty

Seven seasons after joining the NHL, the Islanders began one of the most famous championship streaks ever to have occurred in professional sport. Starting with a victory against the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1980 Stanley Cup finals, the team was able to create a dynasty that won four consecutive championships. During this period, the Isles were able to win an astonishing 19 consecutive playoff series wins, rarely giving other teams a hope of victory. Their dominance during this era was highlighted by the resounding 4-0 series wins in both the 1982 and 1983 finals series. Striving to win their fifth title in as many years, the Islanders fell agonisingly close as they lost to the Edmonton Oilers in the 1984 Stanley Cup finals. Denis Potvin was a crucial member of the Islanders' four consecutive championships, providing a strong defensive anchor for the team and intimidating opponents with his physicality.
