The history of the Devils
Founded in 1974 as the Kansas City Scouts, the team struggled to attract fans for home games and experienced two poor seasons before being moved to Denver. The team was rebranded as the Colorado Rockies and competed as such for six seasons before once again being relocated, this time to the city of New Jersey. The Devils received strong opposition from the neighbouring teams, New York Islanders and New York Rangers, who understood that the relocation would destabilise their control of the market. The NHL however went forward with approval of the move and a distinctive cross-Hudson River rivalry was formed. The Devils and their fans quickly built a strong identity, establishing themselves as the working-class alternative to the bright lights and overconfidence of New York. The team was named after the mythical Jersey Devil, a legend that rose to prominent folklore back in the 1700s. Aptly named NJ Devil, the team's mascot entertains the crowd and creates a memorable experience for young fans. Stanley Cup success
Following lean on-field performances when representing Kansas and Denver, the Devils understood that it was important to win over fans by scoring goals and winning matches. They did exactly that in 1995, when they dominated the Detroit Red Wings in a 4-0 finals series to win the franchise's inaugural Stanley Cup. Not done there, the Devils clinched two more championships in 2000 and 2003 to complete an extremely successful decade for the team. A key player throughout this period was Scott Stevens, who was captain of the team for all three Stanley Cup titles. Stevens led the team for 12 seasons between 1992 and 2004 and was well regarded for his defensive capabilities and physically imposing play. Fans still proudly wear Stevens' jerseys to games and you can grab your New Jersey Devils tickets on StubHub to have the chance to be a part of the crowd!
