"Nazareth Tickets
After more than 45 years together, Scottish hard rock gods Nazareth are still going strong. Their heavy blues-influenced sound helped define hard rock in the 1970s, and they're still showing us how it's done, with energetic and fun performances spanning their entire musical catalogue.
Schedule
Nazareth have upcoming dates across Europe, the UK, and beyond. Their busy tour schedule includes the Lovely Days Festival in Wiesen, Austria, the Steelhouse Festival in Ebbw Vale, UK, and the Rock of Ages Festival in Seebronn, Germany. Trivia
Many people assume the origins of the name 'Nazareth' are biblical, a reference to the ancient Israeli city where Jesus was born, according to the New Testament. In fact, the band is named after a completely different Nazareth: Nazareth, Pennsylvania, which was referenced in the opening lyrics of The Band's famous song "The Weight": "I pulled into Nazareth / Was feelin' about half past dead..." The band Nazareth have cited The Band as a major influence, and have covered their song "Java Blues."
Band
Formed in Dunfermline, Scotland, Nazath's original lineup included Dan McCafferty, Manny Charlton, Pete Agnew and Darrell Sweet, who all met on the local music scene.
The band has been through a number of lineup changes since then, including four guitarists, two drummers, three vocalists, and two keyboard players. In 2013, vocalist Dan McCafferty announced his retirement after 45 years with the band, meaning bass player Pete Agnew is now the only original member.
Breakthrough
In 1971, the four members of Nazareth decided to move to London and have a serious go at it. Their early music was strongly influenced by their popular contemporaries, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Nazareth's self-titled 1971 debut album and 1972's Exercises even included some acoustic folk numbers.
It was their third album, Razamanaz, which first put Nazareth on the charts. Produced by Roger Glover of Deep Purple, it helped define the driving, bluesy rock sound for which Nazareth is now famous. Two songs, "Broken Down Angel" and "Bad Bad Boy," hit the UK Top 10. Later that same year came Loud 'N' Proud, and its unlikely hard rocking cover of Joni Mitchell's "This Flight Tonight" became a hit in the UK, Germany, and as far away as Canada.
Hit Albums
After another UK hit with the album Rampant and its single "Shanghai'd in Shanghai," Nazareth rocketed to superstardom in 1975 with their album Hair of the Dog. The title track became a 1970s rock radio staple, but it was a deep cut Everly Brothers cover that remains perhaps the band's most iconic song: "Love Hurts." That slow-burn hard-love anthem gave the band their first platinum record and only US Top 10 hit. It also landed in the Top 10 in ten other countries.
Overall, the band has released almost two dozen studio albums, plus a dozen more live albums and EPs. They continued to have hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including "Holiday," "Crazy (A Suitable Case for Treatment)," which appeared on the Heavy Metal soundtrack, and "Dream On."
Show Experience
Now nearing the half-century mark as a band, Nazareth still know how to put on a rockin' show. Nazareth tickets ensure you a memorable concert experience, as they have an incredible back-catalogue to pull from, and their shows take full advantage, playing all the hits plus some great new material. Original bassist Pete Agnew is still a magnetic stage presence, with his driving low-end still dominating the sound, and new vocalist Carl Sentance proves he's more than up to the job on those wailing choruses.
