Monterey Motorsports Reunion TicketsIt began when Californian and Ferrari owner Steve Earle organized a race for his friends at the Laguna Seca race course on California's Monterey peninsula in 1974. It has evolved into an annual celebration of motorsports history. One journalist called the Monterey Motorsports Reunion a "rolling museum" where hundreds racing automobiles, some almost a century old, share a single paddock. Part auto show, part vintage car race, the event unfolds over four days each August as part of Monterey Car Week. Each year, over 1,000 cars apply to participate. Around 550 are accepted into the field, based on their age, condition, authenticity and period-correct presentation. With its parade of rare automobiles set against the beauty of Northern California, this race meeting is a social event that TV personality and auto enthusiast Jay Leno has called a "beautiful show for beautiful people." Where is the Monterey Motorsports Reunion race held? The race course at Laguna Seca hosts the Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Built in 1957, the 2.238-mile track has been the site of races for nearly every form of road course racing. Series such as Trans-Am, IMSA GT, Champ Car, American Le Mans and Grand-Am have raced there over the years. Now known as the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the facility is owned by Monterey County under the care of its Parks Department. The picturesque setting and tangible sense of history combine to make an outstanding setting for vintage auto racing.
What kinds of cars participate in the Monterey Motorsports Reunion?More than 500 cars take to the track over the four-day event that has been called "a museum springing to life." They race in groups so that they can compete against comparable vehicles. In addition, the groups often feature cars that raced against one another during their active racing careers. Cars are generally grouped according to their original era and the class in which they raced. For example, all cars from 1927-1951 race in a group. 1974-1979 Formula Atlantic cars compete in a group as do those from 1966-1972 Trans Am. In recent years, several notable cars have participated. These include a 1972 Ford Escort Mk 1 RS1600 once owned by Paul Newman as well as Adam Carolla's 1979 Porsche 935, also once owned by Newman.
Do professionals race in the Monterey Motorsports Reunion?Although the Motorsports Reunion is not a formal or sanctioned racing event, professional drivers sometimes participate. Former Formula One World Champion Mika Häkkinen often takes exhibition laps. David Hobbs took part in 2011. Racer and car constructor Jim Hall joined the field in 2004.
Is the Monterey Motorsports Reunion part of the Concours d'Elegance? Both events are included in Monterey Car Week, a week long celebration of automotive history and tradition. Where the Motorsports Reunion is dedicated to racing, the Concours d'Elegance is a judged show in which elite collector cars compete based on their style, technical merit and historical accuracy. Monterey Car Week also includes a collector car auction, a Porsche owners reunion and The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. The Quail is an exclusive car show held at the Quail Lodge and Golf Club.
What awards are presented at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion? There are no awards or prizes based on finishing position. However, the Reunion Committee awards cars and owners based on categories related to the spirit of the event. They include best paddock display, most period-authentic entry, best Ford entry and best Corvette. An independant panel of judges presents the Rolex Award of Excellence for the outstanding entry in each race category. The entry that best captures the overall spirit of the event receives the Spirit of Monterey Award.
