After dealing with a lot of conference changes and conflicts during the 1900s, the program gained new momentum in the 2000s. Two of the greatest stars to play at the University was the famous Crook Smith and Phoney Smith, who were actually brothers. Another notable alumnus was Wally Butts, who played on the Mercer Bears football team from 1925 to 1928. The only player from the team to go to the professional football league was Les Olson, who had the nickname “ ”Swede.“ ” He ended up playing for the Washington Redskins and actually played for the championship in 1937, making him a legend of Mercer Bear football.
