The professional career of Martin Stephenson is a show in two acts: the first act portrays an artist as the leader of a highly respected and successful band and the second act portrays a more introspective version of the artist, living in partial seclusion but master of his own destiny. Martin Stephenson first formed the Daintees as a teenager in his hometown of Durham, England, and the band established an early reputation in the North-eastern corridor of the country that included the cities of Sunderland and Newcastle, home to Kitchenware Records. ‘Roll on Summertime' was the band's first single, released in 1982, and it drew sufficient response to warrant a studio album, ‘Boat to Bolivia', a collection of conceptual songs delivered in 1986 that featured the self-titled single and became the band's most revered album even though 1988's ‘Gladsome, Humour and Blue' was a Top 40 entry on the Official Albums Chart. Martin Stephenson began the second act of his career when he ‘left' the Daintees to pursue his work as a solo musician in the early 1990s after completing a further three studio recordings with the group that included the critically-acclaimed ‘Salutation Road'. With his departure, Stephenson turned his focus from rock to folk music and over the next fifteen years produced an impressive amount of creations from ‘High Bells Ring Thin' in 1993 to ‘The Lilac Tree' in 1999 to ‘Live art Lincoln Cathedral' in 2005. He would also partner with fellow musicians Helen McCookerybook and Gipsy Dave Smith on other projects, as well as release unplugged versions of his early work with the Daintees. He is credited with over 35 projects since he left the Daintees, not to mention the 13 recordings with the group over the years. Stephenson's music is eclectic like the man himself, juxtaposing blues, country, reggae, rock and jazz themes with an inner spirituality to suit his taste, which listeners enjoy immensely.
