A Colombian singer, performer and songwriter, Maluma is noted for his urban pop style of music and his collaborations with high-profile artists, such as Ricky Martin and Thalia, and fellow Colombian, Shakira. He incorporates various styles of music into his pop performances, including reggaeton, mambo and Cuban merengue. Maluma was born in 1994 and began his career in professional music in 2010. After one of his recordings began to receive a good deal of radio airplay, he was signed to Sony Music Colombia.
Following the interest of a major label, Maluma embarked on recording his debut album. Entitled Magia, this work was released in 2012. It sold in excess of 50,000 copies, making it a gold-selling album. It included the single “Obsesión” which had a video filmed for it. “Miss Independent” was also put out as a single. Achieving a top-five hit in his home country, the single “Pasarta Bien” also received critical acclaim. He was nominated for the Best New Artist at the 2012 Shock Awards.
In 2013, “La Temperatura” was Maluma's next single release. This featured the vocalisations of a Puerto Rican singer, Eli Palacios, and was taken from his eagerly awaited second studio album. This song constituted a considerable breakthrough moment for Maluma, because it brought him to the attention of an international audience for the first time. It gained the number 36 spot on Latin Pop Airplay charts in the United States, for example.
The following year, Maluma worked on “Olé Brazil”, alongside the singer Elvis Crespo. The track was recorded for the upcoming World Cup football tournament. He also started work on television, acting as a judge and mentor on the TV show, The Voice Kids. His second album, Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy, was finally released towards the end of 2015. It cemented Maluma's reggaeton/urban sound and three singles from it entered the American Hot Latin Songs chart.
In 2016, Maluma scored another major hit single in the Hot Latin Songs chart in the US, with “Felices los 4”. This track went to number one in Mexico, Venezuela and Ecuador. It was also a hit in several European countries, such as Portugal, Sweden and Spain. Later in the year, Maluma embarked on a world tour in support of his album, which began in North America. The tour took in several dates in Spain before moving on to the United States in 2017. Maluma's next date in the UK is booked for September 2018 at Wembley.
