Enduring a nomadic childhood fraught with domestic drama and playground bullying, Richard Colson Baker's family finally settled in Cleveland in his early teens, where he discovered his passion for hip hop. His classmates gave him his nickname off the back of his swift delivery, and he soon got a taste of the limelight on MTV2 show Sucker Free Freestyle.

His early mixtapes Stamp of Approval (2006), Homecoming (2008) and his 2012 game-changer Lace Up helped him garner a cult fan base, helping him attract the attention of Sean Combs, who promptly signed him to his label Bad Boy Records. In 2011, he featured on the track 'Inhale' by Juicy J with Steve O of Jackass fame, before releasing his Half Naked and Almost Famous EP in 2012 under the name MGK.
