Lyceum Theatre - Long Time Home of The Lion King
Lyceum Theatre is known as a home for high-quality, Broadway-calibre musicals. Located off the Strand, the Lyceum is a short distance from London's Covent Garden, the capital's epicentre of top-quality theatre. Having served as home of the award-winning production The Lion King for over a decade, the Lyceum consistently sees its seats filled for the popular musical.
More About Lyceum Theatre - Opera and Show Tunes
Like many of London's theatres, the Lyceum has a rich and exciting history. Dating back to 18th century, the Lyceum has been the home of musicals, opera and the odd rock concert. The first London theatre to put on Mozart's Cosi fan tutte and stage Charles Dickens' Tale of Two Cities with the aid of the author himself, the Lyceum Theatre has been at the creative forefront for decades on end. During the period from 1871 to 1902, the famous actor Sir Henry Irving took up residency at Lyceum Theatre, performing Shakespearian classics like Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet.
Transformed after the Second World War, the theatre became the Lyceum Ballroom, a Mecca Dancehall for light entertainment. It continued in this state until it was shut in 1986. Ten years later the theatre was restored to its former purpose, and on opening night '70s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar was revived within its walls.
