Kentucky's largest city is also one of its more storied. Situated on the Ohio River, Louisville's history runs deep, and it has the rich culture to match. Known as the "Gateway to the South," Louisville is primarily known as the home of the Kentucky Derby and the birthplace of the Louisville Slugger bat.

Louisville venues

Undoubtedly, the most famous and anticipated sporting event in Louisville is the Kentucky Derby, which takes place at Churchill Downs. Don your favorite floppy hat, buy yourself a mint julep and cheer on your favorite horses as they race for the roses.

Louisville is also acclaimed as the birthplace of MLB's favorite bat, the Louisville Slugger. While the city doesn't have its own MLB team, it does have an International League baseball team; appropriately named the Louisville Bats, who play, naturally, at Louisville Slugger Field.

If your interests trend more toward arts and culture than sports, you may enjoy sampling the city's best musical offerings at concert venues such as The Mercury Ballroom, The Louisville Palace Theatre or Headliners Music Hall. The Iroquois Amphitheater is an excellent setting for outdoors lovers who want to enjoy concerts and film screenings with a helping of fresh air.
