Kings of the West Coast
The Kings were founded in 1967 when the NHL undertook a major expansion that doubled the size of the league from six teams to twelve. The Kings, alongside the now defunct California Golden Seals, were part of a distinctive move to introduce professional ice hockey to the West Coast and establish growth in a major market. The team experienced limited success in its early years, however rose to prominence when Wayne Gretzky was acquired via trade from the Edmonton Oilers in 1988. Wayne Gretzky, widely renowned as one of the greatest ice hockey players of all time, brought the attention of the sporting world with him to the Kings and would be a major influence on the turnaround of the club. Led by Gretzky in 1993, the Kings won the first game of the Stanley Cup finals, before the Montreal Canadiens roared back to clinch the series. The loyal fans would have to wait nearly two decades to avenge this heartbreak but were rewarded with Stanley Cup victories in 2012 and 2014. Silver and black in the NHL
In 2017, the Kings were joined by a rival Californian team when the Vegas Golden Knights joined the NHL. Competing in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference, the Kings play an exciting brand of hockey. The team originally wore purple and gold jerseys to emulate the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA, before changing their colours to silver and black in 1988. The Kings have had many famous players wear the silver and black over the years, none more so than Luc Robitaille, who was captain of the 1993 team that nearly clinched the Stanley Cup. Robitaille represented the team for 14 seasons and was highly regarded for his scoring ability, which netted him 557 goals for the Kings. The team changed their home arena towards the end of Robitaille's career, moving from The Forum to the newly constructed Staples Center in 1999.
