Laura Mvula Biography - Choir Leader to Pop Star

This artist's gifts were encouraged from a young age after her aunt invited her to join a capella group Black Voices back in 2005. After experimenting with her own jazz/neo-soul outfit, Judyshouse, the aspiring singer-songwriter became Director of the Lichfield Community Gospel Choir and assisted other vocal groups in her spare time. Following her graduation from a composition degree at Birmingham Conservatoire, the singer would write songs on her laptop whilst working as a supply teacher until landing her big break.

After sending out a couple of demos she was quickly picked up by RCA and released her debut EP She in November 2012. The soloist soon found herself the subject of much excitement as she became nominated for a handful of rising talent awards, including the 2013 BRIT Awards Critics' Choice Award and BBC's Sound of 2013 poll where she finished in 4th place. March 2013 saw the release of her debut album Sing to the Moon which followed up catchy Top 40 single 'Green Garden'.
