Afrobeat origins in London's thriving jazz scene
London has for decades been a bustling spot for experimental music from West Africa, with musicians originating from countries such as Nigeria, Ghana and The Gambia shaking up the scene in its early days. Innovation within the city began with Nigerian musician Ambrose Campbell and his West African Rhythm Brothers in the 1940s. Campbell is regarded as being responsible for forming the first black band in Britain and is considered the father of contemporary Nigerian music. A decade later, Fela Kuti and Tony Allen would jam with Campbell among the music lovers of hip Soho joints. London's Afrobeat revolution had begun. Fast forward a few more decades and the city would be rife with Afrobeat fusion acts, pushing the boundaries of the genre and experimenting with new sounds and ideas. At the forefront of its modern era is Kokoroko, and you'd be a fool to miss them! Get to it and buy or sell Kokoroko tickets right here on StubHub now!
