Joshua Redman Biography - Award-winning Jazz Tastemaker
With prominent free jazz saxophonist Dewey Redman as a father, it was little surprise that Joshua showed a passion for music from a young age. He learned to play a plethora of instruments in his infancy, with particular focus on the clarinet and the tenor saxophone. Taking inspiration from the illustrious discographies of Earth, Wind and Fire as well as Prince and Aretha Franklin, he honed his skills as part of a high school jazz ensemble and found himself immersed in the New York Jazz scene after moving to Brooklyn after graduation.
In 1991, the praised composer won the world-renowned Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition and was promptly signed by Warner Bros. Records. His eponymous debut album earned him a Grammy Award nomination in 1993, and his many projects continue to garner critical acclaim today. In the 2000s, albums like Passage of Time (2001) and Momentum (2005) marked him out as one of the leading names in contemporary jazz.
