Jackson State Tigers TicketsThe Jackson State Tigers’ history with the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) dates back to 1911 when Jackson State University, also called JSU or Jackson State, appointed Dr. Zachary T. Hubert to serve as the university's first black president. He then made it one of his missions to develop a football program. In 1911, John Pinkett became the school’s first head coach. By 1952, John Merritt became head coach, and under his tutelage, JSU transformed. In 1958, the team joined the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). To date, the Jackson State Tigers have won 18 championships. As of 2017, the JSU football program produced 94 NLF players and had four NFL players inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame – only 13 other college football programs developed more Hall of Famers than Jackson State. The team, currently coached by John Hendrick, plays at Mississippi Veteran Memorial Stadium, located in Jackson, Miss. Hendrick is the team’s 20th head coach. While most colleges and universities have two-color uniforms, to distinguish themselves from their opponents, JSU uniforms have three - blue, white and gray. What is the energy like at a Jackson State Tigers game?In addition to seeing an exciting game, you will experience an upbeat and energetic feel thanks in part to the Sonic Boom of the South, the JSU marching band. Fans will cheer not only when the Tigers take to the natural-grass field but when the band plays, “ ”Cheer Boys for Jackson,“ ” the school's fight song. In addition, the band has a dance line called the Prancing J-Settes, which developed its own style of dance called J-Setting. Fans should come prepared to follow the “ ”Salt and Pepper,“ ” a high-step style of marching.

On Sept. 14, 2019, the team will take part in the Southern Heritage Classic against the Tennessee State Tigers at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tenn.

The team played in two Orange Blossom Classic Bowls in Miami – in 1961 and 1962. Those games always featured Florida A&M and an opponent from one of the HBCUs. In the 1961 game, the Tigers lost by a score of 8-14. The following year, the team defeated Florida A&M by a score of 22-6. The Tigers made its final appearance to date in the 1971 Azalea Bowl in Mobile, Ala. The team defeated Alabama A&M with a final score of 40-21.
