The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is home of the Indy 500 and Brickyard 400. This expansive property has an address in Speedway, Indiana, though it's just six miles west of Downtown Indianapolis. Indianapolis Motor Speedway has a long history, having been built in 1909, and it is a National Historic Landmark in addition to being on the National Register of Historic Places. It's also a record-breaker, having the largest seating capacity of any venue in the world with a total of 257,325 permanent seats. The track itself is 2.5 miles long, and it's relatively flat. An infield road course was incorporated into the track in 2000. Carl G. Fisher, a local businessman, is the one to thank for the Speedway, as he had grand ideas based on what he had seen in Europe. What types of items can I bring with me?

Outside food and drinks are allowed, as are umbrellas, mobility aids, camera stands (but not selfie sticks), strollers, lawn chairs, coolers (no larger than 18" x 14" x 14") and flags. Note that no coolers or alcoholic beverages are allowed in the garage area.

Is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway wheelchair accessible?

The Speedway has ADA seating in many spots, including the South Terrace, Tower Terrace, Paddock Penthouse and North Vista. Likewise, ADA parking is available in various lots. Attendants with golf carts may be available to help with transportation around the property, and some of those golf carts have wheelchair ramps.

Is the venue friendly to families?

Children are welcomed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. To make it is more affordable for families, children 15 and under are admitted for free to certain events when accompanied by an adult who holds a general admission ticket.

How is Indianapolis Motor Speedway seating arranged?

Grandstands line the Speedway, starting at the Northeast Vista and going all the way to the Southeast Vista, with the Paddock being in the middle. Premium seats are available at the Tower Terrace, Gasoline Alley and Hulman Suites as well as in the Penthouses.

Can I sleep over at the Speedway?

Camping is permitted with the purchase of a special pass. You can get an RV pass that comes with six wristbands, a tent pass that comes with four wristbands or a glamping pass.

Are there other entertainment options at Indianapolis Motor Speedway?

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is located within the Speedway's oval. It's where you can see automobiles, artifacts and more that showcase the Speedway's racing culture. The museum is free on non-event days, but an additional fee is charged on event days.Back to Top
