IMSA SportsCar Championship TicketsThe International Motor Sports Association has been delivering racing events to the public for over 50 years. The association was founded by John and Peggy Bishop in 1969 when they organized the first race that year; however, it was still a couple of years until sports cars were featured in the races. The IMSA SportsCar Championship is actually a series of races in various locations at different times, which then culminates in a final day of racing when the champions of each class are named. The series of events opens at the Rolex 24 Hour in Daytona, Fla., and closes at Petit Le Mans in Braselton, Ga. For the final race day of the 2019 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, it was the Whelen Engineering Racing Action Express No. 31 Cadillac DPi that brought home the big prize at Petit Le Mans. Other than the main race, there are titles for individuals, teams and constructors in various classes. What are the different classes of automobiles I will see race at an IMSA SportsCar Championship event? The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship features sports cars modified by worldwide manufacturers to be racing cars. The championship has four different classes, two being based on road-going super cars and one being entirely a prototype car, showing off the latest in what can be built and raced.
What is the difference between red markings and green markings on the racing cars? The pro classes have professional drivers whereas the Pro-Am classes put a pro driver and an amateur together. To make it easier for fans to determine the class of a car, it was decided that the color red would be utilized as markings on the number panel, rear wing endplate, mirror, windscreen banner, leader light and class decal of a pro-class vehicle. The same was done with pro-am class, but these vehicles use the color green.
What is the leader light system at the IMSA SportsCar Championship? This system is used to make it easy for fans to determine each car's position. The car's position in a race is displayed on a mounted LED panel. The color of the LED readout is either red or green, corresponding with the markings of the vehicle. For example, if a car has an illuminated red three on its side, it is third in a pro-class vehicle.
What is considered one of the all-time classic IMSA SportsCar Championship races? One of the most classic races at an IMSA SportsCar Championship event happened over 50 years ago. It took place during the 19th 12 Hours of Sebring back in 1970. For this race, driving legend Mario Andretti took on a group of other drivers that included racing enthusiast and Hollywood actor Steve McQueen. Andretti ended up winning the race in a vehicle he had never driven before and by 23.8 seconds. Andretti has won many championships throughout his life and has gone on to call that big night one of his favorite races.
