Iggy Pop - The Real Wild Child Returns in 2016
In the late '60s - the age of peace, love and supergroups - wild Michigan band The Stooges unleashed their avant garde, primal brand of blues upon the world with such raw aggression and reckless abandon that it would change music on both sides of the Atlantic forever. Widely considered the 'godfather of punk', frontman Iggy Pop's raucous records and hedonistic showmanship paved the way for a slew of other bands and branches of rock music, and he continues to make a direct impact to this very day.
Still making music in his twilight years, the hell-raising, torso-baring, punk-inventing soon-to-be-septuagenarian is back with a brand new album Post Pop Depression in 2016, a collaboration with Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. With hits like 'Gardenia' showing its star has lost none of his verve or vigour, experience his legacy live in the flesh when you buy Iggy Pop tickets on StubHub UK.
Iggy Pop Biography - Punk Pioneer Still Going Strong
Completely different to any of their contemporaries, Detroit band The Stooges debuted their primitive clash of electric blues and garage rock in Ann Harbour in 1967. As much as their belligerent sound made an impact, it was the defiant delivery of their wild frontman Jim Osterburg - aka Iggy Pop - that made them an instant cult prospect. Their eponymous 1969 debut and 1970 follow-up Fun House created a wave of excitement among frenzied music fans but their 1973 album Raw Power (and particularly the remixed record by Iggy's good friend David Bowie) sealed their legacy forever. The band practically invented punk music, blazing a trail all the way from their Michigan hometown to London, where groups like The Sex Pistols and The Clash borrowed Iggy's unapologetic sound and braggadocio charm for their own records.
After relocating to West Berlin with Bowie to overcome his demons in the late 1970s, Iggy Pop set about carving a career as a solo artist, producing some of the best albums in music history including The Idiot and Lust for Life, both released in 1977. More introspective and accessible as an artist in his own right, the godfather of punk produced timeless tracks including 'The Passenger' and 'Chinagirl'. With Bowie's stamp all over the records, the driving drums and chant-along choruses transformed Iggy into a bonafide music icon. There are many bands we'd be without if it wasn't for the 'world's forgotten boy', including Nirvana and Queens of the Stone Age, who both cite Iggy and The Stooges as a main influence. In 2016, Mr Pop will enter another astounding chapter of his career upon the release of his brand new studio album Post Pop Depression, rumoured to be his last ever LP.
