Humana Golf Challenge
January in La Quinta, California (near Palm Springs/Palm Desert) happens to be the perfect setting for some unbelievable golf, which is exactly what the Humana Golf Challenge tends to offer every single time out. For more than half of a century, this is a tournament that has been dazzling fans with some incredible moments that always have fans glued to the course, providing more than enough incentive to head out and see what these world-class golfers have in store. It also doesn't hurt that the action goes down at the PGA West Nicklaus Course, a top-tier place for golf that routinely is the perfect backdrop for all of the action.
In 2014, it was the 28-under par performance of Patrick Reed that ended up being the winning score, delivering some jaw-dropping moments along the way as the best of the best battled it out under the Californian sunshine. So whether you're already in the area or looking for a golf-centered road trip that will have you begging for more, the Humana Golf Challenge is certainly the place for you, as this is about as good as it gets for golf enthusiasts. As these great golfers light up the course from the opening tee on, the entire experience will completely speak for itself, and you might even catch yourself daydreaming about doing it all over again the following year.
Humana Golf Challenge Event Info
The Humana Golf Challenge was first held in 1960 and is a par 72 contest that grew out of the Thunderbird Invitational which had been held in Palm Springs from 1954 through 1959. The tournament has been held at three different courses over the years: the PGA West Nicklaus Course, the PGA West Palmer Course, and the La Quinta Country Club. For years, the Humana Golf Challenge was known as the Bob Hope Classic before changing its name in 2012, though the talent level and overall enthusiasm has remained the same throughout. This is an event that has featured countless big-name celebrities alongside the greatest golfers of all-time. A few of the celebrities that competed in the tournament include Burt Lancaster, Bing Crosby, Kirk Douglas, Desi Arnaz, Dwight Eisenhower, Frank Sinatra, Gerald Ford, and many more.
The Pro Golf Experience
Of course it can be better than nothing to watch from home, but you can't really get an adequate feel for the action or a full idea of the elements against which the golfers are competing unless you are out there on the course. Spending a lovely winter day outside walking a beautiful course in the Coachella Valley and seeing the best golfers in the world battle one another is an experience you will never forget and one which will likely have you wanting to never have to settle for watching from your couch again. Of course, at the Humana Golf Challenge you also have the opportunity to rub elbows with some of your favorite celebrities who are competing in the celebrity pro-am.
Humana Golf Challenge History
The first Humana Challenge was won by the legendary Arnold Palmer, who won the tournament five times throughout his celebrated career – more than any other golfer. In fact, no other golfer has won the tournament more than two times, so it appears that Palmer's record will stand for some time. Many of the biggest names in the history of golf have won at the Humana Challenge, including Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Jack Nicklaus, and Billy Maxwell. With a long reputation for bringing together incredible talent and passionate fans who show their support at every turn, this is an event that you absolutely don't want to miss out on.
Humana Golf Challenge Trivia
Can you name the five golfers to win this event two times in a given decade?
The first one to do it, of course, was Arnold Palmer, who won it three different times in the 1960s. Billy Casper soon became the second to achieve the mark, winning twice in the '60s, followed by Johnny Miller (1970s), John Cook (1990s) and Phil Mickelson (2000s). Palmer also holds the record for longest gap in between his first and last wins, as he took down the inaugural 1960 tournament (Palm Springs/Desert Golf Classic) and won his final one in 1973 (Bob Hope Desert Classic).
