Trivia
While known for his musical talents, there's more to Howard Jones than some may know. To begin with, by the time Howard reached the age of seven, he was already classically trained as a piano player. Before the success of his music career, Howard used to give piano lessons for extra money. When Howard's family moved to Canada, he gained his first opportunity to be on Canadian TV. This performance included Howard singing Welsh songs. As an adult, Howard's first step in the music industry was a contemporary rock band named Warrior. Later, his turn to synthesiser came from an early automobile accident in which his wife was injured slightly. She used the claim money to buy Howard his first synthesiser and the rest was history.
Singer
Sometimes referred to by the nickname "HoJo," Howard Jones and his journey into music began in Canada where he joined his first progressive rock and roll band. Music filled the Jones household, as Howard's younger brothers had some moderate success in the music business with their own band named Red Beat. Over time, Howard's journey in rock transferred to what he is known for today, synth pop. The many hit songs he's produced certainly pay homage to his early piano training. Additionally, during his success in the '80s, Howard met Buddhist teacher Bill Bryant, who has been credited as a contributor and influence during his rise to fame. Howard has even said that his practice and instruction from Buddhism had "a profoundly positive effect in my life." As a performer, Howard brings his spiritual and classical training to the forefront of his performances. Not only does he sing the songs from his impressive catalogue of music, he remains on the cutting edge musically, as well. Along with singing, Howard continues to play his Roland Fantom G8 and Roland V-piano keyboards on stage. As one of the pioneers of digital sampling, Howard still utilises the Sequential Pro-One and the Roland 808 drum machine to lay down backing tracks during his performances, which is quite a feat for a single performer.
Breakthrough
At a Howard Jones show, one is sure to hear his 1985 breakthrough hits Things Can Only Get Better and No One is to Blame, from the album Dream Into Action. Dream Into Action reached the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 thanks to these two fan favourites. Both songs combined Howard's soft and honest voice along with memorable chorus patterns.
Hit Albums
While Howard has a large catalogue of music, two of his most successful releases are Human's Lib (1984) and Dream Into Action (1985). Human's Lib was Howard's debut release, going directly to number one spending 57 weeks on the Billboard charts, propelled by the fan favourite What is Love? Howard's largest success came with the release of Dream Into Action. The success of Dream Into Action was powered by heavy MTV video rotation of the album's two most successful tracks: Things Can Only Get Better and No One is to Blame. Dream Into Action also recorded Howard's highest chart success, reaching Number 10 on the Billboard charts.
