Houston Open TicketsThe Houston Open is a perennial stop on the PGA Tour. First played in 1946, the tournament has called Houston its permanent home for almost its entire history. It has become a national showcase for some of the most resplendent golf courses around the city. When Shell signed on as the sponsor, the Houston Open became one of the last stops on the tour before the Masters. In 2020, after Shell ended its sponsorship, the tournament moved from the Golf Club of Houston to Memorial Park, for the first time since 1963, as part of a general redesign of the entire event. The Astros Foundation, which is the team charity of the Houston Astros, stepped in to serve as the host and operator of the tournament. Past winners have included Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Payne Stewart, Fred Funk and Curtis Strange. Both Singh and Strange hold the tournament record with three titles each. The results of the tournament count toward the overall FedExCup standings. If you want to catch some of the top players on tour, then you should purchase Houston Open tickets at StubHub.
When does the Houston Open take place? The 2020 Houston Open takes place on the week between November 9th and 15th. Fans can enjoy several unique activities and events on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before the official start of the tournament, including parties, player practice rounds and pro-am competition. Some of these events may be free for the general public to attend. The opening ceremony and the first round for paid attendees begin on Thursday, the 12th. The final round and the trophy presentation both take place on the final day. A more complete schedule with precise dates and times should be announced closer to the start of the tournament.
How is the field chosen?Up to 144 players can participate in the tournament. Because it is an open format, the field features a combination of players from the PGA priority rankings and players that qualify for the tournament from the earlier qualifying rounds. PGA priority rankings are based on criteria like past tournament winners, career money exemptions, FedExCup points standings and more. Players have until the week before the tournament to announce their intentions to join. To continue playing the entire weekend, players must also make the cut after the first two rounds. Players may withdraw from the field at any time.
Who was the winner of the previous Houston Open?Lanto Griffin was the winner of the 2019 tournament with a score of 14 under par. Scott Harrington and Mark Hubbard tied for second with scores of 13 under par. This was the last year the tournament took place at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.
What is the course like?Originally built in 1912, the Memorial Park Golf Course is the most popular public course in the Houston area. It hosts around 60,000 rounds of golf every year. In 2019, the course underwent renovations from course designer Tom Doak (with consultation from PGA player Brooks Koepka) as part of an effort to bring the course back up to the standards of the PGA Tour. The course currently stretches for more than 7,300 yards over relatively flat lands. The longest hole on the course is the 495-yard par-5 at the eighth. The longest par-4 is the 487-yard 17th hole. The Houston Open may play at a par 70 or 71, even as the course remains a par 72 for everyday play.
