After being kicked out of the short-lived 1970s New Wave combo Big In Japan due to "band politics" and releasing a pair of solo singles ("Yankee Rose" and "Hobo Joe") to moderate success, it would be a further five years before Liverpudlian singer Holly Johnson would hit the big time. Having caught the eye of producer Trevor Horn in 1983 with a performance on The Tube, Frankie Goes To Hollywood would take Britain and America by storm off the back of a mass marketing campaign featuring, amongst others, those t-shirts.

Boasting three number one singles and selling well over a million records on advanced sales alone, debut album Welcome to the Pleasuredome was an unmitigated success, but by 1987 the enigmatic band would go their separate ways. Johnson would embark on a solo career - 1989's debut Blast would go platinum, while Johnson also teamed up with fellow Liverpool artists The Christians, Holly Johnson, Paul McCartney, Gerry Marsden and Stock Aitken Waterman to record number one, charity single "Ferry Cross the Mersey" in aid of those affected by the Hillsborough disaster, which claimed the lives of 95 Liverpool fans in April 1989. However, due to his HIV diagnosis in 1991, Johnson's musical output would become more intermittent over subsequent years.
