A theatre with a royal history

Established by English architect and dramatist John Vanbrugh in 1705, Her Majesty's Theatre, known back then as the Queen's Theatre, had to become an opera house due to the fact that drama productions unaccompanied by music were against the law in all but two London theatres that were licensed to do so at the time. In the early 1700s, many of the theatre's shows were operas by George Frideric Handel. The name of the theatre depends on the gender of the current monarch; thus, it became Her Majesty's Theatre when Elizabeth II rose to the throne after being called His Majesty's Theatre between 1901 and 1952. Before this, however, the building saw various rebuilding and renovations. The one that stands today was designed by C.J. Phipps, an English theatrical architect who was one of the leading figures of his profession during the mid to late 1800s. Phipps was also the brains behind the likes of the Royal Strand Theatre, the Prince of Wales Theatre and the Savoy Theatre, the first building open to the public ran entirely by electricity. Hosting only the best in musical theatre

In modern times, Her Majesty's Theatre has been home to musical comedy Chu Chin Chow, written, produced and directed by Oscar Asche. Based on the tale of Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves, the production premiered in 1916 and ran for five years, setting the record with a total of 2,238 performances. It wasn't until almost forty years later that it was broken by Salad Days, which ran for 2,283 shows. Since 1986, Her Majesty's Theatre has been home to Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, the most financially prosperous event in entertainment until it was surpassed by The Lion king in 2014. Webber is also responsible for hit musicals Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
